Liakas Law is dedicated to protecting the rights of the injured against corporate giants, major insurance companies and government agencies who often use their power and status to take advantage of people that they have harmed. On a broader scale, we fiercely advocate making governmental and industrial safety changes that protect our community at large. Some of the firm’s nationally recognized cases have prompted important state and federal safety changes in the past few years alone. Our litigation has driven action for supervisory changes in a major hospital system in the New York area that enhanced the protection of patients after a group of our clients were sexually assaulted at the hands of a local physician; spurred new federal legislation, namely the “Safer Heat Act” (H.R. 6615), that established mandatory safety standards for space heaters after a deadly fire killed five of our clients in the Bronx; contributed to the overhaul of New York State bail reform after our client, a minor, was kept in solitary confinement on Rikers Island for 800 days (about 2 years) and subsequently committed suicide; worked with local officials to correct lapses in firehouse staffing after four of our clients were catastrophically injured responding to a house fire on Staten Island; and prompted the passing of the Child Protective Services Transformation Act that instituted new measures to strengthen the Child Protective Services system, improved oversight functions, and instituted new safeguards to protect children after our client, an 8 year old autistic boy, was brutally tortured and neglected, ultimately resulting in his tragic death.
